Neurocomplexity BTS Update

5/27/2024

As you've probably learned, we've begun a deep dive in the Neurocomplexity [defined below] sphere behind the scenes at Method [more info on the BTS who + what in the coming months] and this theory and model are currently taking shape in some big ways.  I'm looking forward to the future when we are ready to communicate all of the new shapes of this (IMO) important model, but wanted to share this slice in the meantime--for those interested [if not, we get it].

I received an awesome message from a Method follower who was curious about the changes brewing in the Neurocomplexity space at Method, especially regarding neurodivergence.  This individual [who kindly gave me permission to share here] specifically asked:

Will your newer neurocomplexity model still have room in the "tent" for me if I tend towards believing the following?
  • autism is a real thing
  • autism is a neurodevelopmental condition
  • autism is a disability, or is at least disabling for many
  • there are certain aspects of having a neurodevelopmental condition that mean, while neuroplasticity technically exists, it is always going to be harder for me than an allistic person thereby there may be some things about my wiring (such as distorted perceptions, bordering on delusion) that are likely to not change in a significant way in my lifetime

I sent the following response and realized that there are likely many of you (you?) out there who are wondering this, or something similar, about the evolution of Neurocomplexity and our philosophy of neurodivergence [as Method ever evolves].  So,  in the case that it could be helpful for you to know where we stand in this space:

"Thanks for the email + curiosity here.  Neurocomplexity is an inclusive term/model that definitely includes diagnoses (self + professional) of neurodivergence.  It's a new lens to look through that names the connection of neurodivergence to divergences in the physical body (somatic sensations, cellular differences, chronic health issues) + metaphysical energetic field (intuition, creativity, energetic connecting, etc.) for many neurodivergent people.  So, Neurocomplexity is more of a connecting point for many [often siloed] frameworks to work together in hopes of combining research strategies and, most of all, increasing holistic client care to consider complexity of the nervous system.  For instance, a long term hope for this model would be for more health care providers to consider and integrate one's Autism diagnosis when exploring health concerns (ie seeing health through the lens of neurodivergence and vice versa).

For the individual, Neurocomplexity is a way to understand, embrace and have compassion for one's own wiring and how it manifests in other realms of health/existence.

Hope this makes sense [in a nutshell]!"

Would love to hear your questions and learn about your experience thus far with our term Neurocomplexity.  Does it fit for you? Are you a professional who works in this framework?  Are you complexity-affirming and didn't even know it!?

I'll try to update here as things unfold.  Until then...

Lindsey

Common Issues w. Providers Who Lack Competency in Giftedness

Can you relate to any (all) of these experiences with wellness and/or healthcare providers?
  1. My inner struggles are dismissed because I appear stoic externally and/or have a conceptual understanding of my issues.
  2. I feel like I'm too fast for my provider.
  3. I often get a glazed + confused look when I'm trying to explain my feelings or situation.
  4. My concern with existential issues is pathologized or minimized.
  5. I fear that I'm too intense for my provider and don't want to make anyone uncomfortable.
  6. My deep concern for the world + environment doesn't feel like it has a place in my sessions.
  7. I spend too much time explaining my metaphors or abstract thoughts that the session time runs out.

All of these are versions of statements I have heard from my gifted coaching + therapy clients over the years. While there are so many phenomenal therapists, coaches + wellness providers in the world (I truly mean that), understanding + working with giftedness is a specialization like any other in the clinical + wellness worlds. Without proper competence in the area of working with gifted clients, these sessions can stir unintended discomfort, misunderstanding, misdiagnosis and, on occasion, more gifted-related trauma for the client.

Method offers gifted-specific support with trained providers through gifted coaching + the life architecture program for gifted adults, which can even be a compliment to your current meaningful therapy work that may not have gifted components. We see you in all of your complexity, intensity and creativity.

Also, stay tuned for Superwell, a new directory of professionals who specialize in working with creative, gifted and/or neurodivergent individuals.
